With the summer season upon us, ticks are more abundant and can cause challenges for you and for those that receive donated blood.  Babesia, a protozoan parasite that infects red blood cells, is transmitted primarily through a tick bite, but may also be transmitted via:

  • Transfusion of blood or blood components (TTB)
  • Transplantation of solid organs collected from an infected donor
  • From mother to child during pregnancy or delivery
