EGFR is a 170 kDa transmembrane receptor tyrosine kinase that belongs to the Her/ErbB (HER1) protein family.1,2 EGFR gene mutations are common in lung and other cancers, particularly in Asian populations and in patients that have never smoked.2 In-frame deletions occur in exon 19, whereas point mutations occur most frequently in codon 858 (exon 21). A leucine to arginine change at position 858 is the most common of the single amino acid substitutions, and the target of this antibody. The L858R substitution and deletions in exon 19, such as E746-A750, representmore than 90% of EGFR mutations in non-small cell lung cancer patients.3
