It also allows for partnerships between researchers and developers, which can result in greater access to innovative imaging tools for laboratories and healthcare providers.

Roche Digital Pathology BIF image file format2


With the acceleration of immunotherapy and the development of more complex assays, Roche would like to encourage the development of reliable image analysis algorithms that can provide pathologists with tools to improve efficiency and precision for diagnosis. To that end, Roche is making the specification of the Roche proprietary BIF file format publicly available, subject to Roche terms and conditions.

The BIF file format is based on the BigTIFF format; it supports single-wide and double-wide slides at 20x and 40x magnifications with varying tile overlaps. BIF also encapsulates information about which slide areas actually contain tissue. The specifications include a detailed description of the Roche proprietary metadata in BIF and may provide sufficient information to software developers to allow for the implementation of BIF file readers.
