Aberrant high expression of HA in tumors has been associated with increased invasiveness and more aggressive disease.3,4,5 HA may alter the tumor micro-environment by increasing interstitial fluid pressure, reducing cell-to-cell contact promoting of epithelial-mesenchymal transition, and decreasing tumor response to standard therapies.

HA is highly conserved among vertebrates and thus weakly immunogenic. Character-ization of HA levels in tumor tissue has relied largely on extracts of HA binding protein from cartilage or other natural sources. Tumor necrosis factor-stimulated gene 6 (TSG6) has a hyaluronan-binding link module that binds specifically to HA. This module has been cloned and altered to produce a recombinant HA binding protein with high affinity and specificity for HA.6

VENTANA HA Assay is intended for laboratory use and is an affinity histochemistry (AHC) reagent designed to assess levels of HA in formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded human tissue.
