IVD For in vitro diagnostic use.
<b>cobas</b>® 6500 urine analyser series

One tube, one touch. Flexible and scalable automation.

The cobas® 6500 urine analyser series enhances laboratory productivity and efficiency by minimising manual tasks.¹ Designed to fulfil the needs of high-throughput laboratories, it automates urine testing, processing up to 240 samples per hour.

Built with a modular design, the system combines the cobas® u 601 urine analyser and cobas® u 701 microscopy analyser into a fully automated urine work area. Alternatively, both analysers can function independently as stand-alone systems for strip and microscopy analysis.

The cobas 6500 urine analyser series provides a complete test profile, including urine strip and sediment testing for streamlined laboratory workflows.

Stand-alone urine analyser or fully automated urine work area

Both the cobas u 601 urine analyser and the cobas u 701 microscopy analysers can be upgraded on-site to form the cobas 6500 urine analyser series—a single platform with automated sample transportation through the entire system of up to 116 samples per hour.

cobas u 701 microscopy analyser, a fully automated urine microscopy system

The cobas u 701 microscopy analyser improves the gold standard (manual microscopy) in urine microscopy by standardisation and automation of all manual steps, removing operator variability and significantly reducing operator intervention while increasing efficiency.1,2

Benefits at a glance

Benefits at a glance

Fully automated sediment microscopy standardises all steps of the process and provides digital images into the result reporting for objective results.

Standardised automation of microscopy

The cobas u 701 microscopy analyser automates manual microscopy in urinalysis with minimum operator intervention, improving turn around time. It standardises all steps of the process and provides digital images of the microscopy examination for objective results. 15 digital images are taken from each sample.

Storage of digital images

Images can be stored for training purposes or later reference. If the results need manual validation, every operator can review the images on the cobas 6500 urine analyser series screen and reclassify the particles directly on the analyser.

Excellent counting performance

Images are evaluated with a neural network algorithm trained on millions of images. A multicentre evaluation study indicated excellent correlation between cobas u 701 microscopy analyser results and manual microscopy results performed by experienced operators.4 In a study of 852 samples, the cobas u 701 microscopy analyser was shown to be effective in reducing the number of cultures required for rapid screening of urinary tract infections (UTIs).5

Proven innovation in test strip technology combined with over 50 years of experience for confident results.

Proven urine strip technology.

  • 50 years of experience in urine diagnostics.
  • Using the same proven urine strip technology on all Roche urinalysis systems and visual strips ensures comparable results for efficient back-up and network solutions.7

Next-generation technology for strip reading with digital images

  • Four different wavelengths (470 nm, 528 nm, 560 nm, 620 nm) are used to detect the intensity of the reaction colour of the test pads and provide accuracy.
  • The cobas u 601 urine analyser uses innovative reflectance technology and takes high-resolution images of the strip pads through a built-in camera chip in the photometer.
  • Images are evaluated by the system.
  • The system differentiates intact and lysed RBCs, counting up to 50 intact RBCs/μL
  • Errors like dust, bent strips or low sample volumes are identified and presented with the flagging information to help the operator easily find the root cause.

Urine work area design provides a full parameter menu of test strip and urine sedimentation. Showing test strip and urine sedimentation results on a single screen allows convenient validation and result comparison.

True modularity

With a flexible modularity concept, the cobas u 601 urine analyser and cobas u 701 microscopy analyesr can be used as a standalone system or can be combined into a cobas 6500 urine work area.

Gain productivity

Urine work area design provides a full parameter menu of strip testing and urine sedimentation.

Convenience in validation

  • Compare strip testing results and urine sediment results side by side on a single screen.
  • With the zoom function and grid enabling on images, operators discover more details on particles and can compare sizes easily.
  • When particle reclassification is needed, operators can reclassify the particles on the images directly on the analyser, and the system will automatically recalculate results.

Efficient cost management.

  • Automated sieve testing – sediment test only if needed.

Reagent-free cassette concept.

  • Significantly reduces operation intervention while ensuring high quality of results.
  • RFID labelled cassettes reduce operator intervention and ensure the correct transfer of lot-specific information.

Assisted result management.

  • An easy review process improves turnaround time and optimises workflow.

Reduced and improved maintenance.

  • Reagent-free operation, fully controlled reloading of test strips and consumables, clean operation and little intervention save time and improve efficiency.

Workflow efficiency

  • Loading and unloading of 75 samples on one tray with Roche 5-position racks that are standardised and interchangeable with other Roche SWA analysers.
  • Automatically starts operation after sample loadings.
