Frequently Asked Questions

The cobas® 5800 System offers the same menu as the cobas® 6800 and cobas® 8800 Systems, including the cobas® SARS-CoV-2 test and other infectious disease testing. The system offers an expanded on-board capacity, allowing labs to test multiple assays simultaneously and delivers up to 144 results in an eight-hour shift. This streamlined molecular testing system will allow most labs to consolidate over 90 per cent* of their routine molecular tests onto a single platform.

The cobas® 5800 System is built on the proven innovation of the cobas® 6800 and cobas® 8800 Systems but with a smaller footprint. The  cobas® 5800 System is designed to bring efficiency, flexibility and simplicity to laboratories of all sizes, enabling greater patient access. Since 2014, the cobas® 6800 and cobas® 8800 Systems have established the new standard for routine molecular testing by delivering fully integrated, automated solutions that serve the areas of donor screening, infectious disease, sexual health, transplant, respiratory and antimicrobial stewardship. Based on Nobel prize-winning PCR technology, the systems deliver proven performance with full automation, increased throughput, fast turnaround time and complete track connectivity validated for molecular testing, providing users greater flexibility to consolidate their IVD and LDT testing on a single system while increasing overall workflow efficiencies.

Built upon the proven innovation of the cobas® 6800 and cobas® 8800 Systems, the cobas® 5800 System is designed to bring efficiency, flexibility and simplicity to laboratories of all sizes. The system creates a standardized approach to the molecular lab by sharing the same assays, reagents and user interface as the cobas® 6800/8800 Systems to streamline lab processes and offer a seamless user experience.

With a smaller footprint, the cobas® 5800 System expands access to PCR testing to more patients throughout the globe. The new system delivers automation, consolidation, integration and standardization – making it a scalable, cost-efficient solution for smaller labs seeking big lab performance or for bigger labs seeking small lab agility.

The system is built to offer a fully automated workflow that encompasses sample supply, transfer and preparation, amplification and detection, result calculation and delivery to the laboratory information system (LIS). The single module enables a walkaway time of up to eight hours**, resulting in less hands-on time, which may lead to improved productivity, reduced possibility for errors and more predictable turnaround times. führen.

144 tests (8h) / 528 tests (24h)

Depending on workflow:between 4-8 hours > (at max capacity: 4 hours)

Up to 3 aliquots from a single specimen can be created

About 5':loading instrument 15':sample transfer 55'-70':sample preparation + PCR setup 90':amplification + detection

Max 128 samples (S-rack), max 80 samples (R-rack), max 28 (C-rack)

Why Roche?

For well over a century, we’ve focused our energy and investment on developing tests and treatments that change lives and give people more quality time with the people they love.

Each year, we transform millions of lives with our joined-up approach to testing and treatment. But our impact extends far beyond those we treat. Behind every child we test are parents looking for peace of mind; behind every grandparent we treat is a family who can spend more time with them. Roche has supported the nation's health in the UK since 1908, even before the NHS was established. We are a committed, long-term partner to the NHS and the people of this country.
