CK17 is a type I (acidic) cytokeratin encoded by the KRT17 gene and is expressed in myoepithelial cells and in the basal cells of complex epithelia.1-5 CK17 expression is typically present in squamous cell carcinomas of the lung, cervix, and oral cavity.1,2,3 Of note, some undifferentiated or poorly differentiated squamous cell carcinomas may display lower levels of CK17 expression.2,3

The detection of CK17 by immunohistochemistry (IHC) with the anti-Cytokeratin 17 (SP95) antibody may be used to aid in the identification of squamous cell carcinomas. This antibody may be used as part of a panel of IHC studies. The staining pattern is membranous and/or cytoplasmic.
