Ki-67 is a nuclear protein expressed in proliferating cells. Ki-67 encodes two protein isoforms with molecular weights of 345 and 395 kDa.1 Ki-67 is present during all active phases of the cell cycle (G1, S, G2, and M), but is absent in resting cells (G0).1 Ki-67 expression fluctuates during active cell cycle phases, beginning in G1 phase and increasing during S phase with peak levels occurring in metaphase.2 During anaphase and telophase, Ki-67 expression begins to decrease.2 The function of Ki-67 has not been fully elucidated, and little is known beyond it being a protein phosphorylated via serine and threonine with a critical role in cell division.3
