Redesigning the future: A focus on sustainability for diagnostic solutions

In alignment with upcoming EU packaging regulations and our corporate sustainability targets set by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), Roche is updating the packaging format for some of our diagnostic solutions. We are transitioning certain packaging composition materials by moving from bleached white cardboard to plain, brown cardboard, incorporating paper-based inlays, and utilizing recycled foam content when possible. Additionally, we are adopting water-based inks in place of traditional printing materials.

These updates are just one example of how we are working to solve for tomorrow. Changes that support a volume size and weight reduction can help optimize transport efficiency. For example, our Tucson operations team recently updated the shipping crates for one of our large tissue diagnostic systems, widely used by hospitals and laboratories. The redesigned format uses less raw materials, reducing the weight and associated carbon footprint of this transportation element.1,2 

We are additionally introducing a more circular economy mindset in our R&D and product development work, with the plan to leverage ecodesign principles such as reuse, repurpose, renew and recycle for materials needed in the manufacturing, distribution or use of our products. As such, whenever possible we will prioritize selection of recyclable, bio-based, biodegradable, and non-toxic materials, as demonstrated by some of these packaging changes.

We are also exploring ways to extend each product's lifespan by designing durable, modular, and repairable products to prevent premature obsolescence and reduce waste. Teams are looking into innovative ways to minimize the amount of energy and water required during the manufacturing process, as well as during the product's active usage phase.

Service plays a significant role in future sustainability plans, including preventive maintenance, remote support and monitoring as well as a goal for parts that can be upgraded, repaired, or efficiently recycled at the end of life phase. By reducing material waste during production, designing more lightweight, low-volume packaging, and evolving our dependency on cold chain or storage conditions, costly resources for transport and logistics can be minimized in the future.
