The cobas 8100 automated workflow series is Roche’s new modular automation solution that autonomously manages all the operative pre-analytical steps of a professional laboratory. Showcased at the Euromedlab 2013 in Milan / Italy for the first time, the cobas 8100 features some industry-first innovations like a sophisticated 3-D transportation system in order to avoid bottlenecks and therefore keep turnaround times predictable.
Due to its fully flexible and modular configuration, it easily integrates into the existing laboratory environment of the MODULAR ANALYTICS, cobas 6000 and cobas 8000 modular analyzers series from Roche.
A smooth integration of Roche’s post-analytic modules such as the cobas p 501 and p 701 post-analytical units increases a laboratory’s full throughput by self-managed archiving and retrieval of tests.
Currently under development, Roche will enable a laboratory to expand fully automated pre-analytics to coagulation, hematology, urinalysis work areas and to third party systems.
The cobas 8100 key functionalities at a glance
The cobas 8100 is made up of three stations: output, input and aliquot stations. Each station can be configured according to the number of samples laboratories need to manage and the kind of workflow they want to run.
The smart routing of samples is provided with a novel 3-D transport system which avoids traffic jams, in particular at high workload. This enables parallel handling of emergency (STAT) samples and routine testing.
Intelligent single tube transport allows for a true autonomous workflow management: a predictable short turn-around time is made possible by minimal manual sample handling.
In combination with cobas IT solutions healthcare professionals benefit from an ultimate sample tracking capability throughout the entire analytical process with an option of tracking samples across different laboratories.
In summary, the cobas 8100 enables healthcare professionals and laboratory staff to concentrate on patient-centric decisions while routine tasks get managed autonomously. Roche is planning to launch the system in fall of 2013.
